Sleep and health: how one affects the other

Did you realize that not getting the proper amount of sleep and rest will effect your health, it certainly will.

If a person doesn't get enough sleep nightly it can lead to health problems and can also be dangerous. If you are driving a car and just blank out from lack of sleep there could very well be a serious accident resulting from your not being in control of your vehicle. I will

detail my thoughts on the effects of lack of sleep.

As you know there are Sleep Disorder Centers around the country where you might stay overnight and be monitored with the aid of electrodes attached to different parts of your body. This will determine if you have a physical problem as the cause of your sleep disturbance. Usually by going to one of these Sleep Disorder Centers you will be told you need to change your habits and to regulate your internal "clock" by establishing a regular time for getting up every morning and a time to go to bed at night.

There are a lot of factors that can cause a lack of sleep and one is if you go to bed after eating too much and you are just too full or the reverse by going to bed hungry. There are many foods that

contain caffeine such as tea, chocolate, some sodas and coffee which can act as a stimulant on your body. Alcohol can also be a fact as you might go to sleep very easily after one or two drinks but you will not have a refreshed sleep.

Try to de-stress your life as much as possible, tension is a major factor in having sleeping problems. Try to close your eyes, breathe deeply and think about something pleasant or relaxing.

Most of all try to get as comfortable as possible, try to have the temperature in the room comfortable,

get a new mattress if the old one doesn't give you rest after going to sleep and try to block

light out of the room. Try to remember to turn off that television or stereo before closing your eyes or at least set a timer to turn these items

off at a certain time.

Try to relax your mind awhile before going to bed, don't do a lot of heavy exercise and then

expect to sleep, it just won't work. You might

think of taking a relaxing bubble bath and reading before your bed time.

Most experts have done research on the effect of a person's health and have determined that once a good sleeping pattern is established health problems improve. Your resistance gets low to germs you might be exposed to if you have a lack of sleep, perhaps only a few hours a night, such

as colds or the flu. Experts in the field of Sleep Disorders have determined that your immune system is affected by a lack of sleep. With proper nightly sleep you can speed up recovery from infections, prevents accidents, even ward off a potential heart attack. They are trying at this point to determine if there is a link between the immune function and the quality of a person's sleep.

When you get a rested sleep and don't have excessive dreaming you will be more rested in the morning. You will also have less night mares as

some do when they have bad sleeping habits.

If you have insomnia it can cause you to toss and turn for hours at night before you actually fall asleep thus causing your bed partner to not get

a restful sleep.

In summary try to relax, avoid caffeine and unwind before bedtime and your sleep habits will improve and your health also.
